A Man Who Has Nothing In Particular To Recommend Him Discusses All Sorts of Subjects at Random as Though He Knew Everything

There’s A House On My Block

There’s a house on my block
That’s abandoned and cold
Folks moved out of it a
Long time ago
And they took all their things
And they never came back
Looks like it’s haunted
With the windows all cracked
And everyone calls it
The house, the house where
Nobody lives

Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone’s heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?

Well the paint was all cracked
It was peeled off of the wood
Papers were stacked on the porch
Where I stood
And the weeds had grown up
Just as high as the door
There were birds in the chimney
And an old chest of drawers
Looks like no one will ever
Come back to the
House were nobody lives

Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone’s heart break
Or did someone do someone wrong?
So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold

Don’t trade it for silver
Don’t trade it for gold
I have all of life’s treasures
And they are fine and they are good
They remind me that houses
Are just made of wood
What makes a house grand
Ain’t the roof or the doors
If there’s love in a house
It’s a palace for sure
Without love…
It ain’t nothin but a house
A house where nobody lives
Without love it ain’t nothin
But a house, a house where
Nobody lives.

  1. A mansion on a hill is a lovely sight to see
But like any other house, it’s only temporary
    Home is anywhere you choose to put your heart;
If there’s no love inside, it’ll soon fall apart.

Ashes to ashes, dust into dust
Buildings will crumble, bridges will rust
Mountains will disappear, rivers will dry up
And so it goes with everything but love
And so it goes, with everything but love

[Thus sayeth the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band]

  2. Hi Leslie!
I'm currently making Leslie the best. bench. evar.

You're right about the light. The whole house was dark as a grave. We're fixing it a little at a time.

Gerard has eaten dinner in my house, and survived. And he has one of my benches in his house, too.

Andy has cute kids and a very elegant Ten Finger Stepper for them to brush their teeth with. Well, they use a toothbrush, too.

  3. Me! Me, too! And I'd happily replace all my wooden furnishings with Sippican, and sincerely hope to do so, some day.

I love the old house—you have made a fine home for your family. And I especially love those lovely wooden floors. I am certain that when you come up from the basement, your feet and knees sigh in relief.

  4. Hi Deborah- You purchased a ten-finger stepper too, IIRC.

The house is 110+ years old, and was neglected for at least 50 of it, and abandoned to the animals when we bought it. It's a wreck, but it's amenable to effort. The floors aren't flat enough to refinish properly, so we just clean them as best we can as we go.

BTW, my workshop has a wooden floor, because it's not the bottom floor of my house. It's an enormous luxury to me not to work on concrete all day anymore.

Thanks for reading and commenting and buying things.
