People don't realize it, but Rod Stewart was actually great 40 years ago — his first four solo albums in particular. In fact, it's hard to think of an example of a more sudden, steep, and sustained artistic free fall than his. But those four solo albums had a unique sound that mainly combined acoustic instruments with the great rock drumming of the unsung Mick Waller (who was much better than Kenny Jones).
(Actually, it is related, because Led Zeppelin was modeled after the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart; plus, Led Zeppelin shamelessly ripped off Whole Lotta Love from Willie Dixon, which the pre-Rod Stewart Small Faces performed as You Need Loving. Note the slight lyrical similarity.
Raise that hand proudly! I just picked up a used copy of their recent reunion concert, and by no means did they embarrass themselves… although I suppose there is something undeniably weird about 60 year old men singing about teenage lust.
Then again, they added some contemporary lyrics: "Please, go all the way, but if erection persists longer than 4 hours, please seek immediate medical assistance."
I've always been a big Ronnie Lane fan – he's a much better songwriter than he's gotten credit for. He made an album called Rough Mix with Pete Townsend in the 70s that still holds up really well.

Unrelated, but this is pretty funny: Stairway to Help.

Speaking of worthwhile '70s music, any other Raspberries fans out there? Without question the kings of the power pop genre.
***raises hand sheepishly***
