Half a century ago (or so) my cousin married a young man from Millinocket. It was a long drive up there from Connecticut for the wedding, but the father of the groom arranged a tour of the paper mill. It was fascinating to me; logs went in one end and rolls of newspaper came out the other. It seemed half the town worked at the paper mill, which, sadly for most in the town, is no longer there.
All that excitement–men in hats! four meals a day! log walkers! friggin’ DYNAMITE!–and not once, not one single once, was the word “sustainability” ever mentioned. Totally square man. And I mean that in a good way.
Does anyone remember Bill Clinton trying to and in some cases actually shutting down the forests?
I remember here in MT when he was asked what would happen to the men who worked in the forests–lumberjacks. His response was to suggest they could get jobs at McDonalds, etc.

The video fell away, and all I could see were colored lights reflecting off a disco ball. The narration fell away, and all I could hear was, “All skate! This is an all skate.” How bout that organ music; tastier and more evocative than organ meat.
