Cottage favorite Solomon Burke passed away this weekend at the age of 70.
From our 2009 hit of Solomon:
Oh, you average pop star. You think you’re a big deal. You’re not a big deal. Solomon Burke is a big deal.
It’s true you’ve got minimum wage flunkies to sort your M&Ms by color. But until you get a throne, a harpist, and Jools Holland, you’re JAG, baby.

I believe there was a chair reserved for him in heaven.
That set looks a little like soul heaven.
Somebody once asked Jerry Wexler who he thought the greatest soul singer was: "Solomon Burke with a borrowed band."
I wouldn't go that far, but he was certainly one of the immortals.
I posted a pretty cool clip yesterday. I'd love to see the whole documentary.
Wow, very fine. You know he recently had recorded with Buddy Miller? RIP, they don't make them like that any more.
He sure could sing. He has 130 descendants walking around now, so when he wasn't singing or eating, he was keepin' busy. And the sure sign that one is a big deal is when one's chair has a crown. Oh yeah, that's the stuff.
What a voice – one of the last CDs I ever bought was one he made at the House of Blues. Good good music.
