But sometimes I’m the lady, toiling out in the landscape, far from the centers of commerce and culture, hungry for a hint of the world at large; not the door to door salesman.

  1. I was raised on the Og Mandino view of salesmanship–an honorable and a difficult profession. Remember: nothing happens until somebody sells something.

  2. I once went to buy a shirt at a locally-owned department store, which was nearing its end. This man walked up to me, 75 if he was a day, and immediately knew my size and began discussing with me the appropriate style of shirt for the occasion. He was a salesman. He knew his line, and he knew his stock. Every other retail employee I’ve ever dealt with has been a mere clerk. If there were still salesman like that man in stores, I’d buy less stuff over the internet.

  3. I think these people exist still, but in a different format. It’s plain ol clerks that have gone the way of the dodo.

    I generally found that the salesman for technical products and many building disciplines were so well informed and qualified to offer opinions on matters at hand that they amounted to consultants. Thirty years ago they just knew how to memorize price lists and had mastered the clunky information daisy chain necessary to connect willing buyer with willing seller.

    I’m googling Og Mandino right now.
