A Man Who Has Nothing In Particular To Recommend Him Discusses All Sorts of Subjects at Random as Though He Knew Everything

The Tribe

Mairead Hickey from Cork, Ireland. Just thirteen years old in the video. Fifteen now, and something of a big deal in Cork.

Sullivans like me are thick on the ground in Cork. Lord knows what drove us from the place. I think they made it past the whole of the famine, and then bugged out. That strikes a familiar chord. Stubborn, then mercurial.

Nulla manus, tam liberalis atque generalis, atque universalis, quam Sullivanus

No hand so liberal,
And so general and universal,
As the O’Sullivan.

America is not a people. It’s an idea, one that many people share, or shared, anyway. I have trouble discerning that idea with any regularity out in the landscape recently. Sometimes the tribe calls out to me.

  1. She's very clear eyed while playing that, too. Music, an muse, soothes well in these trying times.

  2. Lovely fiddle player on every level. I am also a Sullivan. My clan absconded from Muintervara peninsula in the 1870's. Made it through all the famines them said "ah F#ck it". More than a dozen came over all settled in the same 5 houses in Lincoln RI. In my research I was having difficulty tracking them in records. Partly due to name changes and part due to them just not caring. As my 96 yr old aunt Esther said. "Oh, Tim we were just trying to survive." I was told by a Mahony relation and amateur genealogist who lives in Ireland and is familiar with the clan. "They didn't always obey the law." Lamh foistenach abĂș
